The Sound of Music

It was a jaw-dropping Oscar performance. I don’t know if you saw it, but you should. If you think that you knew Lady Gaga and her skills, you’ll be surprised. The audience at the Dolby Theatre was stunned and gave her a standing ovation. Of course, some observers said that the ovation was more for the incomparable Julie Andrews who came on stage, visibly touched by Gaga’s tribute – a medley of songs from the musical The Sound of Music (1965) whose 50th anniversary we’re celebrating this year.

Before you listen to Gaga, watch Julie Andrews’ original performance from the movie based on Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s Broadway musical (1959):

What Gaga did could redefine her career, as some critics claim:

I remember watching this musical as a child. I remember there was some cartoon version of it that I also loved. Songs such as “Climb Every Mountain”, “Do-Re-Mi” or “My Favourite Things” have been with me for all these years. I will never forget one evening with my friend Anna – some eight years ago – when we sang out all the musical songs we knew (including some Disney themes). It was such a pleasant experience; it brought back some childhood memories, it cleared our hearts and gave us strength to carry on with an artistic project.

I’ve chosen “My Favourite Things” as an inspiration for you, because I know it has inspired so many people already. I like the version from the movie, but I’ve been spell-bound by John Coltrane’s jazz reinterpretation of the theme (1961) ever since I was 12.

Looking for some objects that could represent the lyrics of this song, I found a bracelet that says it all – adorable little piece:

And this is one more inspiration and my understanding of “Raindrops on roses”. Plus, as bed lights, they match the gold and satin from the movie (not to mention the bed frame). Gorgeous!
